Does a GPS Dog Tracker Work Across Europe Without a Subscription? We Tested the PAWVA X01+

PAWVA X01+ review | September–October 2026 | UK, France and Spain

Can a GPS dog tracker work across Europe without a subscription?

Yes. Happy Lion tested the PAWVA X01+ subscription-free GPS dog tracker on a road trip from Newcastle upon Tyne through France and into Spain in September and October 2026. The tracker recorded location history in all three countries without requiring manual mobile-network configuration at international borders. We used Battery Saving Mode while driving and Precision Mode at hotels and rest stops. The screenshots document successful international tracking, but do not prove uninterrupted coverage every minute.

Why we tested the PAWVA X01+

A GPS dog tracker may work perfectly in a local park, but what about international motorways, countryside, unfamiliar hotels and roadside stops? We wanted a practical test of European GPS tracking without recurring subscription fees. We looked for recorded locations across borders, convenient roaming and flexible battery management. The X01+ is PAWVA's entry-level tracker, marketed as a subscription-free pet GPS tracker with premium features.

Our real-world test: Battery Saving Mode and Precision Mode

During long drives, our dog was safely in the car, so we scheduled Battery Saving Mode to reduce unnecessary tracking activity and help conserve battery. At hotels, rest stops and walks, we switched to Precision Mode for more frequent location updates. The distance between some markers therefore reflects our chosen settings and should not automatically be interpreted as a network outage. We changed tracking modes to suit the dog's activity, not because crossing a border required reconfiguration.

23 September: Newcastle through England

The first screenshot shows the route south from Newcastle, through the Leeds region and East Midlands towards southeastern England. The PAWVA app displayed 87 tracking-history points for this date, demonstrating recorded locations during a substantial drive across England.

24 September: England to France without changing network settings

The journey continued towards the Channel crossing near Folkestone and Calais, then into northern France. The app displayed 62 tracking-history points, including locations on both sides of the Channel. Crucially, we did not need to select a French mobile operator, replace the SIM or manually change roaming settings. Location records continued in France without border-related intervention.

25–26 September: Through central and rural France

On 25 September, the recorded route passed the Chartres, Châteaudun and Blois regions, with 50 points displayed. On 26 September it continued towards Châteauroux and Limoges, with 46 points. These records matter because dog owners also visit campsites, rural accommodation and quieter rest stops. The screenshots show positions outside major cities, though they cannot establish continuous connectivity between markers.

27 September: Limoges towards Toulouse

The route continued through the Brive-la-Gaillarde and Montauban areas towards Toulouse. The app displayed 33 points. We continued to alternate between battery-saving driving periods and more precise tracking at stops.

29 September: Into Spain with no manual reconfiguration

The next supplied screenshot shows positions from the Girona area past Barcelona towards Tarragona. It displayed 35 tracking-history points. As when entering France, we did not manually reconfigure mobile-network settings when entering Spain. The tracker recorded positions in its third country.

30 September: Along Spain's Mediterranean coast

The app displayed 53 points along the Mediterranean corridor through the Tarragona, Castellón and Valencia regions. The location history showed continued recording during the Spanish part of the journey.

2 October: Alicante, Benidorm and the Costa Blanca

Our final supplied screenshot showed recorded positions around Alicante, Benidorm, Calpe and Xàbia, with 44 points displayed. By this stage the journey had provided tracking history across England, France and Spain.

What does this test actually prove?

Across the eight screenshots, the app displayed a total of 410 entries in the daily tracking-history counts, subject to confirmation of how the app defines those counts. The screenshots show that location history was recorded in the UK, France and Spain and that no manual network configuration was needed at either international border. They do not independently identify the underlying mobile operators, measure signal strength or prove uninterrupted tracking along every mile.

How does multi-network GPS tracking work abroad?

GPS satellites help a tracker determine its position. A supported mobile data network transmits that position to the owner's app. International roaming enables compatible devices to communicate in other countries when supported coverage is available. PAWVA's X01+ is designed for multi-network roaming; our test provides real-world evidence of location reporting in three countries. Live updates still depend on GPS reception, supported mobile coverage, device settings and internet access on the owner's phone.

Why a subscription-free GPS dog tracker appeals to travellers

Monthly and annual tracking fees can add up over time. PAWVA positions its range as Subscription-Free Pet GPS Trackers with Premium Features. The X01+ aims to combine practical tracking functionality with no recurring tracking subscription. Our road trip suggests that subscription-free does not necessarily mean domestic-only use.

Our verdict

The PAWVA X01+ delivered recorded location history across three countries during a real road trip. We appreciated switching between Battery Saving Mode and Precision Mode, and not having to manually configure networks at borders. This was not a laboratory test or a guarantee of perfect European coverage, but it provides practical evidence for dog owners considering a GPS tracker for travel.
